Become Carbon Neutral

Measure your footprint, reduce avoidable emissions, and be precise about what remains.

Start with a clear boundary

A footprint estimate needs a scope: a household, a journey, an event or an organisation, over a stated period. Keep electricity bills, fuel use, travel distances and other activity records. Write down assumptions so the estimate can be repeated.

Prioritise reductions

Use the estimate to identify your largest sources. Plan changes you can sustain, such as reducing energy waste or changing regular journeys. Review progress using the same method, and account for changes in household size or activity.

Understand a carbon-neutral claim

A claim of neutrality requires more than buying a certificate. It depends on which emissions are counted, how they are estimated, what has been reduced, and how any remaining emissions are addressed. Do not treat an offset as proof that an activity has no climate impact.

Questions for any carbon credit

  • Would the claimed benefit have happened without the project?
  • How is the benefit measured and independently checked?
  • How long will it last, and what happens if it is reversed?
  • Can the same benefit be claimed by more than one buyer?

For a personal plan, start with a transparent reduction goal rather than a label. Understand your carbon footprint, then explore changes at home and on the move.
